Notes

1. You can use any type of yarn to crochet a hexagon. Just check the label to see what size hook corresponds with the weight of your yarn. If you’re making something that needs to be a certain size, it’s a good idea to check your gauge with a sample hexagon before you make a bunch.

2. You have to use two colors (A and B) to crochet a hexagon. On each round V stitches are crocheted with color A and dc stitches with color B. Check out section 4 to learn how to switch colors.

3. This design is easily adaptable for different colors and different dimensions.

Section 1: Stitches

Abbreviations

st(s) = stitch(es); ch(s) = chain(s); ch-3 picot = chain 3 picot; dc = double crochet; dtr = double treble; dtr4tog = double treble 4 together; dtr10tog = double treble 10 together; mc = magic circle; Puff (3 hdc cluster) = 3 half double crochet cluster; sc = single crochet; sl st = slip stitch; tr = treble; [ ] = work directions in brackets the number of times specified;() * = repeat whatever follows the * as indicated.

Special Stitches

Puff = 3 hdc cluster (3 half double crochet cluster) = [Yarn over, insert hook in indicated stitch and draw up a loop] 3 times, yarn over and draw through 6 loops on hook, yarn over and draw through all loops on hook.
V = puff, ch2, puff (puff stitches are crocheted in the same ch2-space).
Puff starting stitch= start with pulling the loop on hook to be same height as a double crochet stitch then complete as described above. Starting stitch is used at the beginning of a round or row.
Dtr10tog (double treble 10 together) = [Yarn over 3 times, insert hook in indicated stitch or space and draw up a loop, yarn over and draw through 2 loops on hook 3 times] 10 times, yarn over and draw through all 11 loops on hook.
Dtr4tog (double treble 10 together) = [Yarn over 3 times, insert hook in indicated stitch or space and draw up a loop, yarn over and draw through 2 loops on hook 3 times] 4 times, yarn over and draw through all 5 loops on hook.

Section 2: Steps

1. Decide how large your blanket will be and how many hexagons you will make. You will find many diagrams that can help you in the section 5 below. There are 3 diagrams for blankets and 3 other for tablecloths.

2. Follow this crochet pattern for a basic hexagon.

3. Crochet lots of hexagons!

4. Block your crochet hexagons to ensure they’re all the same size when you sew them together.

5. Lay out your hexagons in a design that you like.

6. Join your hexagons using the seam method shown in 3rd section below.

7. Weave in all ends.

8. Straighten out the edges (zig-zag, half hexagons) of your big piece. If you want a lace edge, you must follow these instructions (Half Hexagon & Zig-Zag). Otherwise (if you want a solid border like the one in the diagram of Rectangular Blanket 2 in section 5.), you must follow these instructions (Half Hexagon 1 & Half Hexagon 2).

9. Follow this crochet pattern to add border to your project.

10. Congratulations, you have now made a super modern, super awesome crochet hexagon project! Enjoy it!

Section 3: How to join units

This section explains how to join crochet hexagons with an invisible seam when you’re ready to sew them together. There are 5 steps to do this:

1. Line two hexagons up together, right sides facing down. You will do all your seaming on the back sides of your crochet pieces.

2. Insert your tapestry needle through the front loop of the 1st dc stitch of the right hexagon and then proceed through the front loop of the 1st dc stitch of the left hexagon. Pull the yarn through, maintaining snug tension, but not pulling it so tight that it puckers.

3. Insert your tapestry needle through the front loop of the next stitch on the right hexagon and proceed through the front loop of the left hexagon’s next stitch.

4. Continue like this, working from the right hexagon to the left hexagon. Repeat until you’ve run out of stitches and have reached the corner V stich of your hexagons.

5. Repeat steps 1-4 for each two hexagons you add.

Notes

1. You have to block your crochet pieces before joining them together.
2. You have to keep your pieces lined up so that the stitches are always being join one for one.
3. You have to line the pieces up and keep the seam vertical while you are seaming. This is the easiest way for me because it allows me to use my dominant right hand.

Section 4: Switching colors

Crochet first row in color A. Join color B. Work over color B by holding the new color parallel to the top of previous row until the stitch before you switch colors. When you are ready to change colors, it will happen in the middle of a stitch. When you have 2 loops of first color on your hook, do the last yarn over in second color and draw through both loops on the hook to finish the stitch in the new color. Then carry first color behind the work while making the new stitches in second color (over previous color).

From color A to color B (From puff stitch to dc stitch): (1) with color A, [yarn over, insert hook in indicated stitch and underneath color B and draw up a loop] 3 times, yarn over and draw through 6 loops on hook, (2) switch to color B by holding color A behind the stitches at the back of the work, (3) yarn over and draw through both loops on hook with color B. The majority of that stitch will still appear in color A, but the final drawn-up loop will be in color B. Continue to work over Color A until the stitch before you switch colors.

From color B to color A (From dc stitch to puff stitch): (1) with color B, yarn over, insert hook in indicated stitch and underneath color A and draw up a loop, yarn over and draw through 2 loops on hook, (2) switch to color A by holding color B behind the stitches at the back of the work, (3) yarn over and draw through both loops on hook with color A. The majority of that stitch will still appear in color B, but the final drawn-up loop will be in color A. Continue to work over Color B until the stitch before you switch colors.

Section 5: Placement Diagrams

Here are 6 views that show how you can organize pieces. These diagrams are just examples to help you. So you have to add or remove rows and columns depending on the size of the unit and the dimensions you want your final project to be.
