Free Crochet Granny Square Mittens – Roots & Bloom Handmade Warmth from Djerba

When Crochet Becomes a Gesture of Love

Some crochet projects are small.
But their meaning is immense.

These granny square mittens were born from a simple desire:
to keep little hands warm, while wrapping them in something deeper than yarn.

The photos you see show my little angel, wearing handmade crochet pieces, in front of Sidi Yati landmark, one of the quiet treasures of Djerba.
A place of memory. A place of roots.

And suddenly, these mittens became more than an accessory.
They became a symbol.

Why Crochet Mittens Carry So Much Meaning

Mittens are intimate.
They follow every movement.
They protect. They accompany.

When you crochet mittens for a child, you’re not just making something useful.
You’re offering presence, care, and time.

Placing this handmade creation in front of Sidi Yati Mosque was my way of connecting:
- Crochet and heritage
- Modern handmade design and ancestral culture
- Transmission from one generation to another

In Djerba, everything tells a story — and crochet belongs there.

Abbreviations

st(s) = stitch(es); sl st = slip stitch; ch(s) = chain(s); dc = double crochet.

Special Stitches

FPdc (Front Post double crochet): Yarn over, wind hook in and out of the indicated st (from front to back between the posts of the indicated st and the previous one of the row below, and then from back to front again between the posts of the indicated st and the following one).
Then work your dc like normal.

dc2tog (double crochet 2 together): Diminution réalisée en fermant deux brides ensemble : Yarn over, insert hook in next stitch, pull up a loop, yarn over, pull through 2 loops (twice), yarn over, insert hook in next stitch, pull up a loop, yarn over, pull through all loops on hook.

FPdc2tog (front post double crochet 2 together): Diminution texturée travaillée en front post autour de deux brides adjacentes : Yarn over, insert hook around the post of next dc (front post), pull up a loop, yarn over, pull through 2 loops; yarn over, insert hook around the post of next dc, pull up a loop, yarn over, pull through all loops on hook.

How to join units

The joining method used in this project is manual sewing. There are 5 steps to do this:
1. Line two squares up together, right sides facing you. You will do all your seaming on the right sides of your crochet pieces.
2. Insert your tapestry needle through the back loop of the chain corner stitch of the right square and then proceed through the back loop of the chain corner stitch of the left square. Pull the yarn through, maintaining snug tension, but not pulling it so tight that it puckers.
3. Insert your tapestry needle through the back loop of the next stitch on the right square and proceed through the back loop of the left square’s next stitch.
4. Continue like this, working from the right square to the left square. Repeat until you’ve run out of stitches and have reached the corner chains of your squares.

Texture That Makes the Difference: FPdc Details

What elevates these mittens from “simple” to “special” is the texture.
