There is a crochet flower at the center of this colored granny square pattern, made with only two crochet circles. Then you square off the whole thing with a variety of basic stitches. It goes from circle to square of beauty in just a couple of rounds.

st(s) = stitch(es); sl st = slip stitch; ch(s) = chain(s); sc = single crochet; dc = double crochet; dc2tog = double crochet 2 together; tr = treble crochet; mm = millimeters; cm = centimeters; [ ] = work directions in brackets the number of times specified.

Special Stitches

Puff = 3 hdc cluster (3 half double crochet cluster) = [Yarn over, insert hook in indicated stitch and draw up a loop] 3 times, yarn over and draw through 6 loops on hook, yarn over and draw through all loops on hook.
Shell = 3-2-3 dc shell = (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in the same stich.

Written instructions

The pattern is written without color changes, but you can change color as you like.
Make mc.
Round 1: [puff, ch] 8 times, join with sl st in top of the first puff st, sl st in the first ch-space.
Round 2: [puff, ch 2, puff, ch 2] 8 times, join with sl st in top of the first puff st, sl st in the first ch-space.
Round 3: ch, 2 sc in first ch2- space, ch, [skip ch2-space, shell in the next ch2-space, ch, skip ch2-space, 3 sc in the next ch2-space, ch] 3 times, skip ch2-space, shell in the next ch2-space, ch, skip ch2-space, join with sl st in the first ch.
Round 4: ch 4, 3 dc in first ch- space, ch, [shell in the next ch-space, ch, [3 dc in the next ch-space, ch] 2 times] 3 times, shell in the next ch-space, ch, 2 dc in the next ch-space, join with sl st in the 3rd ch.
